U.S. Troops Press Offensive
U.S. troops have pushed into Karabila and other areas around the city of Qaim near the Iraqi-Syrian border as a part of Operation Spear, an offensive meant to disable Sunni Arab rebels fighting in northen Iraq. The offensive, along with Operation Dagger, came as President Bush receives more criticism for his war strategy, asking Americans to “show patience.” U.S. and British air forces were met by about a hundred Karabilia civilians waving white flags, in response to loudspeaker warnings declaring that marines were about to occupy the area. Soldiers found a car bomb factory, Iraqi prisoners, and a torture house, while 50 insurgents and 10 civilians have been killed.
