Alberto Gonzales “Unlikely” to Replace O’Connor
Alberto Gonzales is now said to be the “unlikely” choice to replace retiring Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O’Connor, nor is he expected to be chosen should Chief Justice William Rehnquist or another justice decides to step down in the future. Fred Barnes, editor of The Weekly Standard, writes that President Bush will overlook Gonzales for the position because Gonzales was only recently established as Attorney General, and has yet to prove himself there. Barnes also noted that Bush will probably chose a woman for the position, following a recommendation from First Lady Laura Bush.
