And 9/11 was a local struggle against burning sky scrapers

Andy McCarthy at National Review Online has unkind but entirely accurate things to say about the renaming of the “Global War On Terror” to “Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism”:

So, the folks who brought you “compassionate conservatism” now offer “The Global Struggle Against Violent Extremism.” Perfect: A war that’s not called a war for fear of making people think about war, which is waged against an enemy who is not identified for fear of offending mass-murderers and the people who coddle them, and which occurs everywhere on the planet so no one is left out, but nowhere specific so no one is put in.

I don’t believe that President George W. Bush will rally Americans by giving the war a name that suggests no particular urgency.

It might be more sensitive to call it a “Global Struggle WITH Violent Extremism” which, while still true to the original meaning, does invite a sense of partnership.
