In Europe, it is true, Holocaust denial is a criminal offense in most countries. I'm not sure why they've criminalized Holocaust denial, but they have, to a great extent. Why anybody would want to deny such a well-documented event, - and "well documented" is quite an understatement - escapes me, but certainly it should be legal to do so. However, the anology between Holocaust denial and caricatures of Mohammed seems strained, as the former is counter-factual and the latter is merely an expression of thought or opinion. Further, it is well within mainstream Western culture to viciously mock religious expressions and figures. I am sure you are aware of the "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piss_Christ">Piss Christ</a>" art work, or the animated show "South Park," which recently featured an episode where a statue of the Virgin Mary pissed blood out of her vagina. The reason for this unbounded freedom in matters of religion is a widely shared belief that religious supremacy in society will stifle political debate, social progress and economic development. I don't need government to punish sinners, as I know God shall deal with appropriately on reckoning day. I have no doubt that you want to send our freedom of speech to Hell. We really don't beleive in your freedom of speech, as it's very selective, we will defend our beliefs the way we want to defend it, and the hell with your biased freedom of speech. The Danish newspaper which published the original cartoons has been forced to apologize. The Brussels Journal blog which has led the reporting of this attack on free speech is now receiving threats. Given the state of free speech in Europe as evidenced by the Italian "prove Christ existed" case, I expect Brussels Journal to be forced to remove the cartoons and their reporting. To guard against that possibility, I have reposted the cartoons and the Brussels Journal reporting thread on my blog. I urge all bloggers who care about free speech to do the same.
